About this objectImitation coin, minted sometime in the 14th century. During the 13th century and into the 14th century, English silver coins was seen as the highest quality of silver, in weight and in style, and as such was used across Europe as an international currency. As a result, imitation coins were created that copied the style of silver English coin, such as displaying a portrait of the King Edward I (1239-1307), King of England (1272-1307). Not long after, these coins soon also began circulating across the British Isles as the real article became harder to come by and thus they were used in trade in England, despite the crown's attempt to stop it.
