Our museum is delighted to be participating in Cromarty Open Gardens weekend on 2nd and 3rd July. Pop along to follow a trail of verses around the garden and orchard of a poem written in the local Fishertoun dialect. Have a go at reading them aloud!
“Hunger “, written by local author Vee Walker, is a poem using words and phrases from Cromarty Fishertoun dialect. Vee says ‘It struck me how many words for food, for fishing and for violence and disgust there are within the dictionary, so I have pulled some of them into one humorous poem.’
Bringing the dialect back into use, for example as a creative writing tool in local schools, is one of the museum’s ambitions. There are resource materials ready to use on this website as well as the interactive Fishertoun Dictionary. (You can download the full poem with a translation.)
