Calling digital producers: Create a digital walking tour to showcase historic images of life on the Scottish coast for Cromarty Museum.

Cromarty Museum is looking to commission a production company to design and deliver a location-based digital heritage experience based on a significant photographic collection documenting Cromarty’s historic fishing community. This opportunity is available through the Highlands and Islands Digital Heritage Network, a National Lottery Heritage Fund digital development programme.

The project will showcase a 1903 collection of photographs by Willie John Smith, providing public access to part of the museum’s collection during its extended closure for redevelopment. The images document the working lives, social conditions, dress, and community relationships of Cromarty’s fishing community at the beginning of the 20th century. The photographs represent a way of life that has since disappeared and are of strong local and national interest.

The project aims to engage local community members to co-create new content including oral history, forming part of an immersive audio narrative. The museum is keen to explore how innovative digital technology can elevate the walking tour experience. For example, through subtle animation to bring historic photographs to life and through creative use of sound and storytelling.

The final output will be a free, mobile-access location-based 8-10 stop digital walking tour through the town of Cromarty, and a fully accessible online version for remote audiences.

The project will launch in mid-August 2026.

Cromarty History Society’s next talk will be by Jonathan McColl on February 17th 2026 at 7.30pm in the Victoria Hall, Cromarty and will be followed as usual by refreshments. Visitors are £5 and under 16s are free.

Jonathan McColl has lived in Dingwall for forty years and is starting to get to know it. Back in the days he taught people how to use Microsoft Office apps. He found that work interfered with his history-related hobbies but that is no longer the case. He is the current Chair of Dingwall Museum, a guide in Castle Leod, gives history street walks, and is prepared to chat with anyone about old stuff if they hold still long enough.

The talk “800 Years in an Hour—a Potted History of Dingwall” is what it says on the tin, a burgh story that works in with this year’s ‘Dingwall 800’ events in the town celebrating the first Royal Charter given to the place by King Alexander II that long ago.

Situated inside the museum in a converted prison cell, we recently launched our Cell A Cinema, an 8-seater cinematic space showcasing our newly commissioned short film, Cromarty63. This film was developed using archival footage of Cromarty in the late 1950s – early 1960s, kindly donated to the museum by Arthur Bird.

With the support of the Art Fund, we commissioned this footage to be crafted into a short artistic film by local filmmaker Kyllachy: “Summer is coming to a close in Cromarty. From the lively festivities of the 1963 Regatta, winter arrives and the town succumbs to dramatic storms. The gradual degradation of the film footage acts as a metaphor for the passage of time and the fading of collective memory.”

The Cell A Cinema is open during our normal opening hours (Wednesday – Saturday, 12-4pm) with Cromarty63 playing on loop.
